Birds of Corfu

Spotted Flycatchers are common birds on Corfu. This House Martin was nesting right over the reception entrance.

Red-rumped Swallows collecting mud.

I found this Woodchat Shrike nest at Paleokastritsa.

Olivaceous Warblers are fairly common on the hillsides, and have a very Reed Warbler like call. Other birds seen included Alpine Swifts, , Hoopoes, Turtle Doves, Sardinian Warblers, Sub-alpine Warbler and there were at least five Scops Owls singing around San Stephanos.

  1. Looks like a great holiday Colin!A few years ago i was watching a spotted flycatcher in my back garden (in Billinge). It was on one small perch and flew off no more than a yard repetitively in a loop before returning to exactly the same point but with a mouthful of fly. It was amazing watching it but i havent seen any since,it was probably the mid 90's.

  2. Looks like a great trip Colin. I've spent many an hour watching Woodchat Shrike in the Balearics. Absolutely stunning little birds and one of my favourites.

  3. It was a great trip. I like Greece because you don't have to try very hard to see some great wildlife. Albania was of course a bonus this time, it's always nice to visit a new country.
